According to the Passport Index 2022 released by Arton Capital, the world’s strongest and weakest passports have been ranked. A passport, issued by a country’s government to its citizens, serves as a travel document that confirms the holder’s identity and nationality for international travel purposes.
India secured the 87th position in the global passport rankings, while the UAE clinched the top spot for 2022. With a UAE passport, travelers enjoy hassle-free entry into 180 countries, surpassing European nations like Germany and Sweden by seven countries and Japan by nine countries, as indicated by the index.
The Passport Index considers 139 members of the United Nations and six territories for its rankings. The data is sourced from official government information, continuously updated through crowdsourcing intelligence, and supplemented with credible proprietary research.
The assessment process employs a three-tier method, evaluating mobility scores (MS) encompassing visa-free access (VF), visa on arrival (VOA), eTA, and eVisa issuance within three days, with the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index 2018 (UNDP HDI) serving as a tiebreaker.
Following UAE’s lead, the top ten positions in the list are predominantly occupied by European countries. While Japan secures the 24th rank with access to 171 countries, earlier this year, it topped the list as the world’s best passport in a ranking published by Henley & Partners.
