Addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the need for a sustainable solution to the humanitarian crisis during India’s National Statement at the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala. Mr. Jaishankar firmly stated that “terrorism and hostage-taking are unacceptable” and emphasized the crucial importance of respecting international humanitarian law by all states involved.

Expressing concern about the current situation in Gaza, he called for a sustainable solution that provides immediate relief to the most affected individuals. At the same time, Mr. Jaishankar underscored the unequivocal rejection of terrorism and hostage-taking, emphasizing the paramount importance of abiding by international humanitarian law by all states.

Regarding the Gaza conflict, the minister stressed the imperative that the conflict does not escalate within or beyond the region. Reiterating India’s consistent stance on a two-state solution, he stated that efforts should be directed toward achieving a scenario where the Palestinian people can live within secure borders.

Highlighting the interconnectedness of global issues, Mr. Jaishankar emphasized that peace and stability are fundamental to growth and progress. He cited the example of the impact of conflicts on a global scale, referencing the repercussions of the Ukraine conflict on fuel, food, and fertilizer supplies.

As the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) marks its seventh decade, Mr. Jaishankar called for boldness in seeking due recognition and pressing demands. He encouraged collaboration and reinforcement among NAM member states, asserting that shared efforts can bring about positive global change.

In conclusion, Mr. Jaishankar affirmed the enduring strength and growth of the NAM, emphasizing that “the voice of the NAM is here to be heard, to stay, and to grow.” He conveyed the message that the NAM’s influence remains robust and urged collective action among member states.

Mr. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation at the two-day 19th NAM Summit in Kampala, which commenced on January 19.
