In 2023, Thailand exceeded its target by welcoming 28 million foreign tourists, generating revenue of 1.2 trillion baht ($34.93 billion). Emphasizing the significance of the tourism sector to the economy, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced on Tuesday that Thailand and China will mutually and permanently eliminate visa requirements for each other’s citizens starting from March.
Having already waived entry requirements for Chinese tourists until February of the current year, this move is expected to strengthen the relationship between the two nations. The tourism data for 2023 revealed that Malaysia was the primary source market, contributing 4.5 million visitors, followed by China with 3.5 million arrivals.
