When we consider local train journeys, there’s a certain admiration attached to them. We tend to appreciate the culture of using public transportation, but that doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye to the flaws. Recently, several videos circulating on social media have highlighted the perennial overcrowding on local trains. The primary reason for this is that many people rely on public transport due to its affordability. Understandably, given factors like income levels and financial considerations, a significant portion of the Indian population depends on such modes of travel.

For most individuals, this is a practical and cost-effective way to manage their finances for various needs. However, envision waking up each day, managing household chores, and then boarding a crowded local train or metro to commute to work. This involves logistical challenges like figuring out which train to catch to arrive on time, especially when most workplaces have similar working hours. Such a daily routine doesn’t sound healthy or remotely enjoyable.

The videos depicting people boarding moving trains or holding onto others for support highlight how unsafe this mode of transportation can be. The root issue often lies in the insufficient number of trains to accommodate the growing population, leading to persistent overcrowding. Nevertheless, being compelled to travel in conditions that are neither safe nor comfortable is not a situation that can be considered ideal, especially when this culture is commonly referred to as the city’s “lifeline.”

Another problematic aspect is the romanticization of this scenario, viewing it as something unique or even humorous. This perspective often stems from a place of privilege and ignorance, as those who don’t experience these daily struggles tend to overlook the challenges faced by those who do.

The reality is tough—having to wait for a vehicle, board it, and then struggle throughout the journey just to find a place to stand, let alone sit comfortably. In some cases, the same struggle applies to the metro, where passengers jostle for space, hoping to secure a spot before the doors close. The only advantage over trains is that metro doors eventually close, reducing the risk of accidents. However, the metro is not as financially accessible to everyone, making it a less affordable option for many. While some may find it relatively cheaper, this isn’t the case for the majority.

Society often finds ways to justify this unnecessary romanticization, turning a blind eye to the problems. In reality, we should engage with individuals who have to endure these challenging travel conditions. Without such conversations, meaningful change may remain elusive. Unfortunately, our society tends to thrive on ignorance, clinging to the illusion that we’re doing well when, in fact, we’re barely functioning. The persisting state of local trains in 2023 is shocking, and the least we can do is refrain from justifying or supporting it.
