Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger faced detainment at Munich airport on Wednesday when he failed to declare an expensive watch upon arriving from the US. The Austrian-born actor and former governor of California, aged 76, was held in the customs area. The customs spokesman, Thomas Meister, revealed that criminal proceedings have been initiated against Schwarzenegger for alleged tax evasion related to the luxury watch. The tax should have been paid since Schwarzenegger intended to sell the watch in the European Union. The bespoke timepiece, created by luxury Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, was set to be auctioned at a fundraising dinner for Schwarzenegger’s climate initiative in Kitzbuehel.
