Tanveer, a budding talent in international cricket, hails from Jalandhar, India, but his parents are currently based in Sydney. Having played two T20Is and two ODIs, he is poised to make an impact in the upcoming India Vs Australia T20I series starting in Visakhapatnam.
During the Cricket World Cup 2023, Indian fans were introduced to promising Indian-origin players representing other nations, such as Rachin Ravindra from New Zealand and Aryan Dutt, Vikram Singh, and Vikram Singh from the Netherlands. Rachin Ravindra particularly stood out as one of the tournament’s most remarkable discoveries.
Tanveer Sangha, another Indian-origin player, recently made his debut in September against South Africa, playing two ODIs and two T20Is on the tour. The 21-year-old right-arm legbreak bowler impressed selectors by taking five wickets in two games and two wickets in an equal number of ODIs. Notably, Tanveer’s outstanding T20I debut, securing four wickets for 31 runs, marked one of the finest performances by an Australian cricketer in nearly two decades.
Born to Joga Sangha and Upneet in Sydney, Tanveer’s upbringing has been in Australia, although his roots trace back to India. His father, originally from a village near Jalandhar in Punjab, works as a taxi driver in Sydney, while his mother pursues a career as an accountant.
Tanveer gained prominence after claiming 15 wickets in the 2020 U19 Cricket World Cup, earning a Big Bash League (BBL) contract with Sydney Thunder. His success continued, leading to his selection for the T20I series against New Zealand. In 2021, he made his first-class debut for New South Wales, becoming the second Indian-origin player to represent Australia after Gurinder Sandhu.
As Adam Zampa is expected to take a rest post the World Cup, Tanveer is likely to assume the role of the leg-spinner for Australia in the first match against India at Vizag. It remains to be seen how this talented right-arm leg-spinner performs in the series against the country of his roots.
