Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as ‘Prachanda,’ secured a vote of confidence in Parliament on Wednesday amid ongoing challenges to maintain political stability in the country.
Prachanda, aged 69 and a former guerilla leader representing the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), garnered 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives, marking a significant show of support.
This vote of confidence follows recent political developments, including Prachanda’s decision to part ways with the Nepali Congress and form a new alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist).
Notably, this is Prachanda’s third attempt to seek a vote of confidence since assuming the prime ministership in December 2022. The constitutional requirement mandates a prime minister to seek a vote of confidence following the withdrawal of support from a coalition ally.
