Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was arrested in Tyler, Texas, last week for driving while intoxicated (DWI) – marking at least his third such charge, according to jail records. The arrest occurred just eight days before his son was scheduled to play in Super Bowl 2024 against the 49ers in Las Vegas.

New details surrounding Mahomes Sr.’s arrest have emerged, revealing that he informed the police he had consumed a few beers while watching a game at a local bar when questioned about drinking while driving. This incident marks Mahomes Sr.’s third DWI arrest, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. During the arrest, he agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, showing several clues of intoxication during various assessments.

The arresting officer stated, “Based on the totality of the circumstances, I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place.”

Mahomes Sr., a former MLB player with an 11-season career, faced a second DWI charge in 2018, resulting in a 40-day jail sentence. He and his ex-wife Randi divorced in 2006. Notably, their other son, Jackson Mahomes, had faced legal issues last year, but the charges were dropped in the subsequent month. Despite Mahomes Sr.’s arrest, he attended his son’s playoff games earlier in the year.

The timing of Mahomes Sr.’s arrest adds a layer of complexity, occurring just days before his son’s significant appearance in the Super Bowl.
